Artificial Reefs
Artificial Reefs range greatly across our marine ecosystems. An Artificial reef can be a shipwreck, statues, frames for coral restoration, and honestly anything that is sank for the purposes of attracting marine life. Students enrolled in this course will gain a better understanding of the different artificial reefs surrounding the southern shores of Oahu, and assist in the implementation and maintenance process. This course is a partial fulfilment of the Ecological Monitoring Program and the Advanced Ecological Monitoring Plan.
Prerequisites:
Be certified under a globally recognized diving agency (PADI, SSI, NAUI etc.)
Be at an advanced level of diving and demonstrate self-awareness underwater
Standards:
Understand the different types of artificial reefs deployed in Hawai'i and the pro's and con's of using different methods
Learn the full process of artificial reef deployment from start to finish, including on-going maintenance
Understand the reasons behind artificial reef success and failure
Assist in the deployment of artificial reef structures
Requirements:
Attend the Artificial Reefs of Oahu lecture
Perform at least 3 dives dealing with the artificial reefs
maintenance and cleaning
monitoring coral health and growth on the AR
Deployment of an AR OR attachment of corals to the nursery
Pass the Final Exam

$150/day for 3 day course, $185/day for 2 day course
